Assembly weekend kicked off with a meeting of the HCF Council Executive Committee, the first annual Kick-Off Meeting of volunteers from across the Harvard College Fund, and the Leadership Dinner, where the annual HCF Volunteer Awards were presented.

In addition, the Executive Committee announced its ambitious goal of raising $40 million in immediate-use support by June 30, 2010. In support of the goal, a new communications strategy was unveiled that emphasizes examples of impact and supports volunteers in the development of their own personal stories for use in solicitation efforts.

Saturday morning’s program highlighted the new General Education curriculum and provided an opportunity for volunteers to hear from faculty currently teaching General Education courses, including Dean Smith.

President Faust rounded out the morning program with an inspiring look at Harvard’s financial aid history and the importance of the university’s commitment to supporting access for students from a broad range of backgrounds.

Those who braved the weather were rewarded with a 37-3 victory over rival Princeton by Harvard’s football squad.

Welcome to FY10! This moment is a critical opportunity to reaffirm the Harvard College Fund as a primary source of current-use support for the College. As we prepare for the coming academic year, we will have a focused approach on emphasizing current-use support as it relates to Dean Mike Smith’s ongoing and emerging priorities.

First and foremost, we’ll be establishing Fund-wide current-use goals for the HCF overall, to be strived for by both reunion and non-reunion classes. We’ll all work together to determine the part that each class, as well as the Parents Fund and Graduate School Fund, will play in reaching this goal. In the process, we will want to refine our messaging and communications about the impact of current use giving on the students, research and teaching at Harvard. We are continually considering striking the right balance between current-use gifts, which are not invested in the endowment and spent immediately, and endowment gifts.

Second, we will be introducing three new opportunities for donor recognition that will emphasize current-use giving. The Harvard Yard Society is already in place for FY09 donors. This society will recognize alumni, parents, and friends who have made current-use, unrestricted gifts of $50,000 or more. They will receive communications from the Dean with information about the impact of current-use gifts. Additionally, we will be placing a recognition wall in University Hall that lists the Harvard Yard Society donors from the previous fiscal year. The wall will be updated each year, and will convey to the FAS community how much we value these gifts. Donors who make current-use, unrestricted gifts of $25,000 or more will continue to receive correspondence about how their contributions benefited Harvard. In FY10, we will be rolling out the Harvard College Fund Scholars Program and the Graduate School Fund Fellows Program. These groups are for donors of $25,000 and up who earmark their current-use gifts for either undergraduate or graduate financial aid. During the year in which the gift is made, donors will support one student per $25,000 given, and will receive a detailed report on each student who has benefited from their gift. Donors will also be given an opportunity to meet their students.

We would also like to call your attention to the HCF Kick-Off meeting this fall. This meeting will be an opportunity for volunteer leaders discuss common HCF goals and prepare for our shared work to benefit Harvard’s deserving students. Our goal in this working meeting is to engage all volunteers, in reunion and non-reunion years, at every level.

The Kick-Off meeting will precede the HCF Assembly weekend, which will be an exciting opportunity to connect with fellow volunteers and to hear from President Faust and Dean Smith. We have an exciting lineup of symposia, all of which will focus on the new General Education curriculum. Of course, no Assembly weekend would be complete without a football game; this year Harvard will take on Princeton. More details on the Assembly will be coming soon, so stay tuned.

As you can see, the coming year is going to be an exciting one for the Fund. There will be a lot of changes, and we’ll rely on you, our volunteer leaders, to advance our efforts.

Last fall, we re-launched the YardLINE website with a new look, fresh content, and updated volunteer resources. Take a look back at YardLINE FY09, re-familiarize yourselves with the content, and let us know how you’d like us to improve the site for FY10.

In October 2008, we launched a new and improved version of YardLINE, which emphasized the importance of making connections, both to Harvard and to our classmates. The new site included a quiz about House life, Fund news, photos from recent HCF events, profiles of undergraduates who are involved in the Fund, testimonials from fellow alumni, and contact information (including photos) for HCF staff.

In November, we introduced the Volunteer Resources page, which we now consider to be one of the central aspects of the site. The page includes education and training materials, handbooks, and useful websites that aim to help volunteers make the case for supporting Harvard in conversations with classmates.

We entered 2009 confronted with financial challenges but determined to be steadfast in our commitment to undergraduates. We provided several new online resources for volunteers that focused on our top two priorities: current-use, unrestricted funds, and undergraduate financial aid. Whether it was in the form of online polls, fact sheets, or a Facebook Fan Page, our goal was to get across two main points:

Current use, unrestricted gifts are not invested in the endowment, but are spent immediately to benefit undergraduates;

Harvard’s commitment to its undergraduate financial aid program has not wavered in the face of increased costs and financial challenges, and alumni support continues to be essential.

In the spring, we profiled Bob Panoff ’69, a dedicated member of the HCF volunteer community. Bob has been a leader in promoting current use giving and participation among his classmates. We also introduced the “Parents” section of YardLINE, containing useful resources for Parents Fund volunteers. We promoted the HCF Virtual Phonathon, received feedback on a Fund-wide email campaign, and recognized the outgoing and incoming leaders on the HCF Executive Committee.

As we look ahead to next year, we would love to hear from you – what kind of content would you like to see on YardLINE? What type of stories interest you most? Which resources do you find to be the most helpful? Leave your comments below or send your ideas to hcf@harvard.edu.

There are still two weeks left before the end of the 2009 Fiscal Year, and all of our volunteers are working extremely hard to reach HCF goals. We wanted to share some encouraging updates from our Reunion, Associates, and Participation programs.

Reunions:

This year, across all Reunion classes, there were 30 pledges or gifts of more than $1 million, and 130 between $100,000 and $1 million. Most of these gifts will endow much needed professorships, scholarship funds, scientific research, and special programs that Harvard will depend on in the long term. In addition, for the first time there were a small number of donors who made six or seven figure gifts in current-use funds, which will have an immediate impact. $2 million of the 25th Reunion’s class gift is designated for immediate, unrestricted use.

Class events help to provide momentum and generate class spirit, and this year was no exception. The Class of 1984 kicked off their 25th Reunion with a party at the Empire State Building, which was lit in crimson and white that night. The 15th managed to stage three events in one day in Hong Kong, New York, and Chicago. A member of the Class of ‘74 hosted 30 Classmates at a Washington Nationals game. The 50th Reunion joined undergraduates for dinner in Elliot House, followed by a Hasty Pudding show.

Associates:

To date, the Associates Program has secured 3,216 Associates-level gifts or pledges, totaling more than $12 million, the majority of which is designated for immediate and unrestricted use. We have achieved 71% of our 4,500 membership goal and 83% of our $15m dollar goal.

Congratulations to the classes of 1968, 1976, 1977, 1983, and 1985 who have made it into the Century Club (100 Associates donors).

Associates events were also very well-attended this year. In April, Jim Napolitan ‘69 and his wife, Sandy, hosted an Associates Program cocktail reception at their home in Chicago. Thirty alumni were in attendance, and heard from Suzy Nelson, Associate Dean of Harvard College for Residential Life. On May 13, 65 recent graduate Associates donors gathered for a cocktail reception at Prana restaurant. The following evening, on May 14, Vice Chair for Associates Giving Don Wilson ‘70 hosted a reception at his home in Greenwich. Nearly 50 Associates donors attended and heard from Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology Jeffrey Lichtman. This event was co-hosted by Janet Nezhad Band ‘83, co-Vice Chair for Associates Giving.

Thanks to all our Associates volunteers who have worked so hard this year.

Participation:

50 dedicated volunteers took part in the FY09 Virtual Phonathon, and were successful in reaching 200 classmates. These volunteers secured nearly 100 gifts and pledges, totaling more than $25,000. For context, this amount equals a Harvard Scholarship for one financial aid student. Thanks to all who participated - we are looking forward to gathering feedback about this year’s system and using it to enhance future remote calling efforts.

Leaving the HCF Executive Committee:

Bambi Putnam ‘76 - Member-at-Large

Bambi has been a dedicated class leader for over 30 years. She’s also an involved Harvard parent. She’s been a steady and upbeat voice for the Executive Committee over the past four years, always ready to help, host, and solicit. We’ll count on Bambi to stay close - particularly as her Class gears up for its milestone 35th Reunion in 2011.

Tom Reardon Jr. ‘96 - Vice Chair for Recent Graduates

Tom has served as a mentor for senior gift committees and led the Recent Graduates Committee in launching the 1636 Society Challenge, resulting in 150 recurring gifts from the Class of 2008 during their Senior Gift Campaign. He has been a guiding force in the development of the now annual Recent Graduates Leadership Workshop and this year has helped to spearhead the implementation of the Fund’s online outreach effort on our Facebook Fan Page, Supporting Financial Aid at Harvard College.

Katy O’Brien Bordonaro ‘76 - Vice Chair for Participation

In her role as Vice Chair for Participation, Katy has been a constant source of creative strategy, has maintained an endlessly positive attitude, and has remained eager to engage alumni far and wide to reconnect with each other and with Harvard. She was one of the earliest and strongest proponents for the “Virtual Phonathon,” enabling alumni to solicit classmates on their own time and on their own terms. Katy has also been a stalwart phonathon volunteer, rarely missing a single event, and has encouraged many of her peers to participate in these fundraising activities. In addition to her role on the Executive Committee, Katy has been a key member of her class’s leadership team, and has inspired her son Mick ‘05, AM ‘09 to become a fellow champion of participation.

Vice Chair for Participation Katy O’Brien Bordonaro ‘76 and her son, fellow HCF volunteer and participation champion Mick Bordonaro ‘05, AM ‘09.

Don Wilson ‘70 - Vice Chair for Associates Giving

An early leader in recognizing the importance of current-use, unrestricted money, Don is a true champion of annual giving, helping to outline fundraising practices that have standardized and strengthened the Associates program as a whole. Don is Co-Chair of his Class, on the New York Major Gifts Committee, the Committee on University Resources, and the HCF Dean’s Task Force on Leadership Giving.

Ernie Monrad ‘51 - National Chair of the John Harvard Society, Vice Chair for Bequests and Gift Planning

Under Ernie’s leadership the John Harvard Society has grown from roughly 1,100 to its current living membership of 2,600. Over his 12 year tenure as national chair realized bequests of almost $333 million and life income gifts of $374 have been committed to the long term support of the FAS. Ernie is also former chair of the Harvard College Fund and a chair and a member of the gift committee for the Class of 1951 over countless reunions.

HCF Co-Chairs Kate Gellert ‘93 and Steve Waters ‘68 acknowledge Ernie Monrad ‘51 for his 12 years of service as Vice Chair for Bequests and Gift Planning.

Kate Gellert ‘93 - Co-Chair, Harvard College Fund

Kate has been a Co-Chair of the Fund for three years. Prior to that, she served as a Vice Chair for Associates Giving and Vice Chair for Recent Graduates. Kate is chair of the Class of 1993, and has held that role through her 5th, 10th, and 15th Reunions. She’s a member of the Radcliffe Institute Dean’s Advisory Committee and serves on the Gala Committee of the University Art Museums. She is also a member of the Dean’s Task Force on Leadership Giving, an elected Director of the Harvard Alumni Association, and a former member of the New York Major Gifts Committee and the FAS Women and Leadership Committee. Kate is a truly exemplary volunteer, not just because of the skill and dedication she brings to the Harvard College Fund, but because of the warmth and compassion that accompanies it. Luckily, Alumni Affairs and Development will continue to benefit from Kate, as she takes on the role of Elected Director of the Harvard Alumni Association as well as their Co-Chair of Engagement and Marketing.

Steve Waters ‘68, along with HCF Executive Director Charlie Cardillo ‘91, thanks his Co-Chair Kate Gellert ‘93 as she ends her term.

Joining the Executive Committee:

Alan Jones ‘83 - Member-at-Large

Alan has been on the Class of ‘83 Gift Committee for years, and Co-Chaired his 25th Reunion last year. He also serves on the Dean’s Task Force for Leadership Giving.

William Decherd ‘01 - Vice Chair for Recent Graduates

William has served on his Class committee since graduation, and co-chaired his 5th Reunion. He is the youngest member of the Dean’s Task Force on Leadership Giving. He will be joining Lauren Reiss Frank ‘98 as co-Vice Chair for Recent Graduates.

Joe Fuller ‘79 - Vice Chair for Leadership Giving

Joe is currently serving as a Class Chair for his 30th Reunion. He just completed his term as Member-at-Large on the Executive Committee and is a member of the Dean’s Task Force on Leadership Giving. A newly created position on the Executive Committee, the Vice Chair for Leadership Giving is charged with promoting annual current-use support, advising on the development of the peer solicitation program, and promoting stewardship and recognition programs. We are thrilled that Joe will be bringing his expertise and enthusiasm to this new position.

Scott Abell ‘72 - Vice Chair for Bequests and Gift Planning

Many of you know Scott from his time as Associate Vice President and Dean for Development in the FAS. Scott is also a former President of the Harvard Alumni Association and Co-Chair for the Class of ‘72. He will join Gary Pforzheimer ‘84 as a champion of our planned giving efforts.

Sam Lessin ‘05 - Vice Chair for Participation

Sam has been a member of his Class Committee since he graduated, and he also serves on the Recent Graduates Standing Committee. Sam was actively involved in increasing the online presence of the Class of 2005 on the HCF Class Giving website. He will join Eryn Ament Bingle ‘95 as co-Vice Chair of Participation.

Rick Smith ‘74 - Vice Chair for Associates Giving

Rick is a member of COUR and the New York Major Gifts Committee, and he is a Chair this year for his 35th Reunion. His twin sons, Alastair and Nicholas, recently graduated from Harvard College. Rick will join Janet Nezhad Band ‘83 as co-Vice Chair of Associates Giving.

Sandy Edgerley ‘84 - Vice Chair for Reunion Giving

Sandy is a Co-Chair for her 25th Reunion, and is a member of the Reunion Giving Standing Committee. She is also active with the Harvard Business School Reunion Fund. She will join Nick Sakellariadis ‘73 as co-Vice Chair for Reunion Giving.

To kick off the meeting, FAS Dean Michael Smith gave an update on FAS finances and his plans for FY10. He discussed his approach to cost-reduction within the FAS and the working committees that he has put together to address the budget challenges. Dean Smith emphasized his ongoing commitment to financial aid and the undergraduate experience, giving some updates on the Gen Ed program and House Renewal. He clarified for the group the critical role that current-use funds play in the long-term success of Harvard, and affirmed the crucial part that the Harvard College Fund and its volunteers play in the current-use fundraising effort.

Steve announced that going forward, we will be establishing Fund-wide current-use goals, as well as separate goals for Reunion and non-Reunion Classes. He also described two new giving societies that will recognize alumni who give current-use funds. Steve told the group that though these recommendations are still in draft form, they have been approved by Dean Smith and are in keeping with his vision and plans for the FAS. Further information on the Task Force and its recommendations will be shared soon.

Under Harvard’s low- and middle-income financial aid initiatives, the family tuition contribution for more than 3,000 undergraduates is now at or below tuition levels of the top twenty U.S. state schools, as identified through US News and World Report.

This is your Harvard. This is the impact of your gift.

I hope you will take this moment to support Harvard College by clicking the “Donate Now” button, calling 1.800.VERITAS, or responding to our printed appeal.

A review of Harvard’s course catalog reminds me again and again that Harvard College undergraduates have the unique benefit of studying at one of the world’s top research universities. In the freshman seminar The Atomic Nucleus on the World Stage, for example, students explore the development and implications of atomic weapons on our world under the guidance of Professor Roy Glauber, a Nobel-prize winner whose personal recollections of working on America’s atomic project enliven the class’s reading material.

Your gift helps make possible extraordinary and innovative learning at Harvard. Freshman seminars rely largely on the flexible funds provided through annual alumni support.

Please take a moment to make your annual gift and help to continue these exceptional learning opportunities for Harvard students.

From time to time, alumni ask me what impact their annual gifts have on Harvard. The answer is that this support enables Harvard to offer a superlative undergraduate experience because it funds both the day-to-day necessities and the emerging priorities that a largely restricted endowment simply does not address.

Every gift matters. Please take a moment to make yours before June 30 and visit http://post.harvard.edu/collegegift, call 1-800-VERITAS, or reply to my printed letter today.
